Karachi (Lord Media): Washing rice before cooking is a common practice worldwide, but new research highlights its nutritional effects. Experts state that while washing rice removes dust and some nutrients, it does not significantly impact nutrition.
According to experts, washing rice mixes minerals like iron, zinc, copper, and vanadium with the starchy water. Nutritionists note that rice is not a major source of these minerals, so washing does not have a notable negative nutritional effect.
One key reason for washing rice is to reduce arsenic levels. This natural element can enter rice plants through soil and water. Experts suggest that washing rice can reduce some arsenic content, though not completely eliminate it.
The presence of microplastics is also a concern. A 2021 study indicates that washing rice before cooking can reduce microplastics by 20 to 40 percent. Initial evidence suggests that reducing their presence could be beneficial.
Some experts argue that rice sold in supermarkets is sufficiently clean due to modern industrial processes, making repeated washing unnecessary. Overall, experts agree that washing rice is a useful precaution, but it is not necessary to wash it until the water runs completely clear.
Nutritionists recommend washing rice once or twice for cleanliness and health, while excessive washing offers no proven additional benefits.
