Oil firms warn of fuel shortage, urge action

ISLAMABAD (Lord Media): Oil companies have urged the government for immediate intervention amid fears of a potential petrol shortage in the country. The companies report that only 15 days’ worth of petrol reserves remain. The Oil Companies Advisory Council (OCAC) wrote to Energy Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik on July 15, emphasizing the need for urgent action.

According to the advisory council, the country currently holds 370,000 metric tons of motor spirit (MS), sufficient for just 15 days of consumption. The council warned that failure to intervene promptly could disrupt petrol supplies.

Companies have indicated that delays in WeBOC are affecting the clearance of imported petrol, and if three import cargos do not arrive on time, the supply chain could be compromised. Additionally, oil companies are facing a financial crisis due to unpaid dues amounting to 66.7 billion rupees.

Industry sources suggest that extremely low reserves, delays in customs clearance of imported fuel, increased demand, and severe financial pressure could lead to supply disruptions.
