PSL introduces new rule allowing teams to choose final XI after toss

A new and innovative rule was witnessed during the inaugural match of the Pakistan Super League, adding a fresh tactical dimension to the tournament.

During the toss, Shaheen Shah Afridi, captain of Lahore Qalandars, and Marnus Labuschagne, leading Hyderabad Kingsmen, arrived with two separate team sheets each.

Under the revised regulations, both captains submitted two different team combinations to the match referee before the toss and selected their final playing XI after the toss result.

Once finalized, no changes can be made without the consent of the opposing captain.

The rule has been introduced primarily to address the impact of dew in night matches, which often affects gameplay. Wet conditions in the second innings make it difficult for spinners to grip the ball, influencing team strategies.

With this flexibility, teams can better balance their line-ups. For instance, a side batting first may opt for an additional fast bowler, while a chasing team can strengthen its batting order.

However, in the opening match, weather conditions including wind and cloud cover meant that dew had minimal impact on the game.
