Scientists move closer to eliminating genetic diseases before birth

NEW YORK (Lord Media): A new scientific study suggests that it may be possible to eliminate genetic diseases in human babies before birth. However, experts caution that several significant scientific and ethical issues need to be resolved before this technology can be safely used.

Humanity has always sought to alter the course of time and destiny, and now medical science has taken a step that allows humans to become editors of life’s fundamental script, DNA.

According to a recent scientific report, scientists have successfully corrected genetic defects within human embryos in a laboratory with unprecedented precision. This breakthrough has sparked new hopes for eradicating incurable hereditary diseases, while also igniting a global ethical and legal debate.

This scientific marvel is driven by a new and highly sensitive technology called ‘base editing,’ likened to a ‘word processor’ or cut-and-paste tool for DNA.

Professor Dieter Egli and his team at Columbia University conducted experiments on early human embryos donated through in vitro fertilization (IVF). They precisely altered individual chemicals on the DNA strand that cause blindness, heart defects, or lethal blood diseases at the embryonic level before birth.

However, this shining scientific advancement has a dark and concerning aspect that has alarmed ethicists. The biggest question being raised is whether humans are now attempting to ‘play God.’

Currently, over 70 countries have strict legal prohibitions against implanting these modified embryos into a woman’s womb to produce a child. Even the scientists involved in this research warn that this technology is not yet ready for clinical use, meaning it is not yet suitable for creating babies.
