Beijing (Lord Media): China has made significant strides in computing technology, surpassing the United States in the list of the world’s fastest supercomputers. China’s supercomputer, Line Shine, located at the National Supercomputer Center in Shenzhen, has claimed the top spot in the June 2026 Top 500 list. This system operates entirely on chips developed in China, marking the country’s re-entry into this list after three years.
Line Shine has overtaken the former number one U.S. supercomputer, El Capitan, which is used by the U.S. government for managing and researching nuclear weapons stockpiles. Although Line Shine leads in the traditional Top 500 test, it ranks fourth in criteria specific to artificial intelligence tasks.
Experts suggest this development highlights China’s focus on self-reliance in technology and local chip manufacturing over global dominance in artificial intelligence. China first topped the Top 500 list in 2010, with the position alternating between the U.S. and Japan until 2023.
