Rare freshwater jellyfish found in Paraguay

Paraguay (Lord Media): Scientists have discovered a rare freshwater jellyfish in Paraguay for the first time. The jellyfish was found in a flooded and isolated mine, unconnected to any river or stream.

The discovery involves the jellyfish species Craspedacusta sowerbii, identified by researcher Gonzalez de Dos Santos from the National University of Asuncion in the Ypacarai region. This marks the first official report of this species in Paraguay.

The research has been published in the scientific journal ‘Eco Sistemas’. A key question for scientists is how the jellyfish reached the mine, given the lack of connection to any natural waterway.

Experts believe the organism may have been transported via contaminated water or diving equipment to reach the mine.
