Iran sets conditions for World Cup participation in US

Iran national football team has confirmed its participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026, saying the team will take part in the tournament but host nations the United States, Canada and Mexico must address Tehran’s concerns.

According to the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran, uncertainty over the team’s participation had emerged due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East and recent political disputes.

However, Iranian football authorities have now decided that the national team will compete in the tournament.

Federation president Mehdi Taj said Iran had placed 10 conditions before the host countries, including the smooth issuance of visas for players and officials, respect for the Iranian national flag and anthem, and full security arrangements for the squad.

Iran has particularly sought assurances that there would be no visa complications for players allegedly linked in the past with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, including Mehdi Taremi and Ehsan.

Earlier, Gianni Infantino had made it clear that Iran’s matches in the tournament would be staged in the United States according to schedule.

Iran have been placed in Group G alongside New Zealand national football team, Belgium national football team and Egypt national football team. The Iranian side will open its World Cup campaign on June 15 in Los Angeles.
