Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, has paid rich tribute to journalists, columnists, reporters, editors and all media professionals for their dedicated services.
He said that journalism plays a vital role in ensuring an informed and aware society, stressing that timely dissemination of authentic, impartial and unbiased news forms the foundation of responsible journalism.
The Prime Minister underlined that it is the professional duty of journalists to prevent the spread of propaganda, fake news and unverified information, adding that media practitioners are custodians of both professional and social values.
He noted that this year’s theme, “Shaping a Peaceful Future,” reflects the needs of the contemporary world and highlights the importance of a secure and enabling environment for journalists to perform their duties with dignity.
Shehbaz Sharif said that sustainable peace is not achieved through diplomacy alone, but also through credible information, responsible journalism and informed public opinion, which play a decisive role in shaping narratives.
He added that the media has the capacity to play a constructive role in improving diplomatic, economic and social relations between countries by accurately representing perspectives and helping resolve complex issues through dialogue.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s stance, the Prime Minister said the country believes in dialogue and negotiations for resolving differences and tensions, and is actively contributing to regional peace and stability through diplomatic efforts.
He also noted that during challenging times, including national security situations, the media played a responsible role by presenting Pakistan’s position with clarity, restraint and accuracy while countering misinformation.
Paying tribute to journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty, the Prime Minister said their courage serves as a reminder that press freedom is a valuable asset that must be protected at all costs.
He observed that the media landscape is rapidly evolving with the rise of digital platforms, which now play a significant role in shaping public opinion globally.
He warned that the spread of fake news and organized disinformation campaigns poses a serious threat to national cohesion and international reputation, urging media organizations to balance speed with accuracy.
The Prime Minister called on journalists to uphold the highest standards of verification, integrity and professionalism, ensuring that truth is not compromised in the fast-paced digital age.
Concluding his message, Shehbaz Sharif reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting and promoting press freedom and creating a conducive environment for responsible journalism, adding that Pakistan seeks to move forward as a peaceful, confident and dignified nation on the global stage.
