PM Shehbaz pledges protection of labour rights on Workers’ Day

Pakistan joined the global community in observing International Labour Day on May 1, with tributes paid to workers while highlighting the continued economic challenges faced by the country’s labour force, particularly rising inflation, unemployment, and low wages.

Across major cities, labourers were seen continuing their daily work routines despite the symbolic occasion meant to honour their contributions. Many workers, especially daily wage earners, remained engaged in searching for employment and carrying out physically demanding tasks without rest.

The day was marked by official statements acknowledging the struggles of the working class, which continues to face financial pressure amid persistent economic uncertainty.

In his message on the occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to the labour force, stating that the sacrifices of workers keep the country’s economic and social systems functioning.

He said that skilled and unskilled workers both within the country and abroad represent Pakistan’s capability, hard work, and professional excellence. The prime minister added that the day serves as a reminder to renew commitment toward safeguarding workers’ rights and ensuring their dignity.

He further emphasized that collective efforts are needed to protect the rights of labourers and improve their living and working conditions across all sectors.

International Labour Day is observed globally each year to recognize the contributions of workers and to raise awareness about labour rights, fair wages, and safe working environments.
