ICC hails Olympic cricket stadium as historic step

The International Cricket Council has termed the start of construction on a cricket stadium for the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 a historic milestone for the sport’s global expansion.

According to an ICC spokesperson, the stadium is being built at the Fairplex ground in Pomona, where a formal groundbreaking ceremony was held on Wednesday.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah described the development as a significant moment for cricket, noting that the sport is rapidly strengthening its global footprint. He said cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics is a matter of pride for fans worldwide.

ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta said the return of cricket to the Olympic stage marks the beginning of a new era for the game’s international growth.

Officials said the new venue will serve as a central hub during the Olympics and is expected to leave a lasting impact on the development of cricket in the United States.

The ceremony was attended by key figures including LA28 Vice President Niccolò Campriani, Pomona Mayor Tim Sandoval, Consul General of India in Los Angeles K J Srinivasa, CEO of Knight Riders Sports Venky Mysore, and Fairplex President Walter Marquez.

Experts believe cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics will help expand the sport beyond its traditional strongholds, particularly boosting its popularity in the United States and other emerging regions. The T20 format for both men’s and women’s competitions are expected to attract new audiences and enhance global reach.

Cricket is set to return to the Olympics after 128 years, with its last appearance dating back to 1900.
