Earthquake damages Raj Kapoor haveli in Peshawar

A historic haveli of legendary Bollywood actor Raj Kapoor located in Dhaki Munawar Shah area of Peshawar was damaged after an earthquake struck the region, causing one of its walls to collapse.

Local residents said the structure was affected by the tremors, which weakened parts of the building.

Director Archaeology Abdul Samad said the Raj Kapoor haveli is a nearly 200-year-old historic structure.

He added that the government has already declared the haveli and the ancestral home of Dilip Kumar as national cultural heritage sites.

According to Abdul Samad, Rs34 million have been allocated for the restoration of both buildings; however, the work has not yet begun due to non-release of funds.

It is pertinent to mention that tremors were felt a day earlier in Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Azad Kashmir, with the earthquake recorded at a magnitude of 6.1.

The quake was felt in Peshawar, Nowshera, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Muzaffarabad, Sargodha and Murree.
According to the seismic monitoring centre, the epicentre was located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan at a depth of 190 kilometres.
