GUIYANG: As part of the ongoing 2026 China Storyteller Partnerships program, an international delegation of journalists and digital media influencers visited the Zhongnanmen Historical and Cultural Tourist Area in Tongren, Guizhou Province, where they experienced one of the region’s most remarkable cultural and historical landmarks.
Recognized as a national 4A scenic site, Zhongnanmen is located in the Bijiang District of Tongren and boasts a history of over 400 years. Widely regarded as the largest and best-preserved historical quarter in the area, it reflects a unique blend of eastern Guizhou traditions with influences from the Central Plains and Huizhou merchant culture. Delegates were impressed by how the site preserves China’s rich cultural heritage while integrating modern tourism experiences.
During the visit, participants explored the area’s well-preserved architecture from the Ming and Qing dynasties, often described as a “living museum.” The site features more than 100 ancient buildings, dozens of traditional courtyards, and historic lanes characterized by grey tiles, blue bricks, and distinctive firewalls. Delegates praised the meticulous preservation of these structures, noting that they offer a vivid glimpse into China’s architectural and cultural history.
The delegation also visited several cultural landmarks within Zhongnanmen, including the Confucian Temple and the Fanjing Tea House, which highlight the region’s intellectual and cultural traditions. At the same time, the presence of modern amenities such as exhibition centers and hospitality facilities demonstrated how heritage conservation can be effectively combined with contemporary development.
Participants were particularly impressed by the vibrant cultural activities that bring the area to life. Traditional long-table banquets, cultural performances, and intangible heritage displays provided an immersive experience that allowed visitors to engage directly with local customs and traditions. Delegates described the atmosphere as lively, authentic and deeply enriching.
Zhongnanmen’s role as a “red culture” site further added to its significance. The area houses former residences of notable historical figures such as Zhou Yiqun and He Long, offering insights into China’s revolutionary history. Delegates appreciated the integration of historical narratives into the visitor experience, which adds depth and meaning to the cultural landscape.
Spanning approximately 18 hectares, Zhongnanmen has become a major destination for cultural tourism, attracting millions of visitors in recent years. Delegates noted that the site’s ability to preserve its historical integrity while accommodating modern tourism needs serves as an excellent model for sustainable cultural development.
Throughout the visit, members of the delegation actively documented their experiences, sharing images and insights with global audiences. Many expressed admiration for the site’s beauty, organization and cultural depth, emphasizing its importance as a symbol of China’s heritage and progress.
The visit to Zhongnanmen left a lasting impression on the international delegation, who praised it as a remarkable example of cultural preservation and innovation.
