Government reviews impact of rising oil prices and regional challenges

President Asif Ali Zardari chaired a high-level consultative meeting at Aiwan-e-Sadr to review the evolving economic and energy situation amid oil supply constraints, rising petroleum prices, and regional security developments.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir also attended, along with key federal ministers including Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Senator Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, Ali Pervaiz Malik, and Ahad Khan Cheema.

The meeting focused on the effects of fluctuations in global oil and gas supplies and prices on Pakistan’s economy, particularly in managing inflationary pressures and ensuring energy security. Ministers for Finance and Petroleum briefed the participants on measures to stabilise petroleum prices, manage the impact of rising fuel costs, and enforce fiscal discipline through austerity to reduce expenditure pressures.

The session also reviewed regional developments and their implications for Pakistan’s security, economic outlook, and food security. Participants emphasised the need for a coordinated national response, prioritising stability while safeguarding public interests.

The meeting highlighted the importance of maintaining national consensus, strengthening institutional coordination, and aligning economic management, energy planning, and food security with broader security considerations. Officials also encouraged public awareness initiatives to reduce fuel consumption, promote the use of public transport, and adopt shared ride systems.
