Morocco declared AFCON 2025 champions after CAF ruling

In a major development, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has overturned the result of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, declaring Morocco as the new champions after stripping Senegal of the title.

The decision was announced following a ruling by CAF’s appeal board, which accepted Morocco’s protest regarding the controversial final played in January.

According to details, Senegal had initially been declared winners after the match ended amid controversy when their players staged a protest against the referee and walked off the field. The interruption led to a 14-minute suspension of play, creating uncertainty over the outcome of the match.

Morocco subsequently filed an appeal with CAF, challenging the validity of the result and citing violations of tournament regulations.

In its verdict, the CAF appeal board stated that under Article 84 of the competition rules, leaving the field of play is considered equivalent to forfeiting the match. It further noted that Senegal’s players had breached Article 82 by abandoning the game.

“As per Article 84, the match is awarded to Morocco with a 3-0 scoreline,” the statement said.

The ruling effectively crowns Morocco as the winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, bringing an end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding the disputed final.
