Complaint filed against Hardik Pandya over World Cup celebration

A legal complaint has reportedly been filed against Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya after his celebration following India’s victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup drew criticism.

According to Indian media reports, the cricketer celebrated the World Cup triumph on the field with his friend Mahika Sharma. During the celebrations, Pandya was seen wrapping the Indian national flag around himself while interacting with her.

A lawyer, Wajid Khan, has filed a request seeking the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against the cricketer. In his petition, he alleged that Pandya’s actions amounted to disrespect of the national flag.

The lawyer reportedly argued that the act violated provisions related to the dignity of the national flag and requested authorities to initiate legal proceedings.

He submitted the complaint to the Pune Police, urging officials to register a case and investigate the matter.

According to the application, the conduct could fall under provisions of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act 1971, which emphasises the proper respect and dignity of the national flag.

Indian media reports said the request has been received by authorities and further action will depend on the legal review of the complaint.

The controversy emerged after India defeated New Zealand national cricket team in the final, following which players celebrated their World Cup victory on the field. Mahika Sharma was reportedly present at the ground during the celebrations.
