Heatwave in UK may cause 2,700 deaths

LONDON (Lord Media): Experts from Imperial College London, the Met Office, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine have warned that the intense heat in May and June may result in approximately 2,700 deaths in England and Wales.

According to the report, 550 deaths occurred between May 21 and 29, while an estimated 2,200 deaths were recorded from June 18 to 28. June’s heatwave broke a 50-year record as temperatures soared to 37.7 degrees Celsius.

Professor Friederike Otto highlighted that most deaths occurred in June, cautioning that even healthy individuals are not immune to the heat. She warned that such heatwaves could become more frequent in the future.

Experts attribute the heatwaves to a heat dome, which can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and other fatal conditions. Extreme heat is a silent killer that can impact even healthy people.
