ISLAMABAD (Lord Media): Pakistan lacks a formal system for rabies surveillance, leading to approximately 5,000 deaths annually. The CEO of the Indus Hospital and Health Network met with Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal to discuss urgent measures.
The delegation briefed that the country does not have an effective rabies monitoring system, with millions of dog bite incidents reported each year, predominantly affecting children and rural populations.
Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal expressed concern over the rising burden of rabies and granted in-principle approval for a national rabies prevention and control framework. He announced the formation of a National Technical Working Advisory Group to guide the framework’s development.
Mustafa Kamal praised the anti-rabies campaign in Sindh, stating that the federal government is committed to working with provincial governments and technical partners to eliminate rabies-related deaths.
