Rome (Lord Media): Scientists have successfully baked bread using yeast extracted from the 5,000-year-old mummy, ‘Ötzi the Iceman’. Ötzi’s mummy was discovered in 1991, frozen in ice near the Italy-Austria border. Researchers studying this mummy have not only made bread from the yeast but are also planning to brew beer with it.
Ötzi’s body remained preserved in ice for approximately 5,300 years, and since its discovery, scientists have been researching it to gain a better understanding of ancient human life.
Scientists from the Eurac Research Institute for Mummy Studies isolated living yeast from Ötzi’s remains and the microorganisms around it.
For the first time, experts used ancient yeast to bake bread. Microbiologist Mohammad Sarhan described this as an excellent start, noting that the dough prepared with the yeast rose like regular yeast within 24 hours.
Following the successful bread-making experiment, the next significant use of this yeast could be brewing beer. According to Mohammad Sarhan, the research team has initiated discussions with experts from Germany’s renowned Weihenstephan Brewery on this unique idea.
