Pakistan’s Ambassador to Russia Faisal Niaz Tirmizi has said that Pakistan and Russia are actively working on a gas pipeline project as part of broader efforts to strengthen energy cooperation between the two countries.
In an interview with a Russian news agency, the envoy said Pakistan remains in close contact with Moscow and expects cooperation in the supply of oil and gas to meet its growing energy needs.
He noted that recent disruptions in global energy supply routes, including concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, have highlighted the importance of diversifying energy transportation channels. He stressed that not only Pakistan but the global community also needs alternative and secure routes for oil supply.
Faisal Niaz Tirmizi confirmed that work is underway on the Pakistan Stream gas pipeline project, describing it as a key energy initiative between the two countries. He said the South Gas Pipeline project remains an important part of bilateral cooperation and Pakistan will return to it at an appropriate stage.
He added that progress in economic cooperation mechanisms could turn the project into a historic agreement between Pakistan and Russia.
The ambassador further said that discussions are also ongoing on the North-South transport and energy corridor, with continued engagement between both sides on various connectivity and infrastructure initiatives.
