Remo D’Souza reveals why he converted to Christianity at 15

Renowned Indian choreographer and filmmaker Remo D’Souza whose real name is Ramesh Gopi Nair has revealed the reason behind converting to Christianity at the age of 15.

Speaking in a recent interview, the filmmaker clarified speculation surrounding his religious conversion, saying many people mistakenly believe he changed his faith for marriage.

“I want to make one thing clear people think I converted for marriage, but that is completely untrue,” he said.

Remo explained that before moving to Mumbai, he lived in Jamnagar, where he was closely associated with a local church. He said he regularly worked for the church by organising shows, collecting clothes and contributing donations.

According to the choreographer, a priest named Father Davis once asked him why he did not formally accept Christianity despite his strong connection with the church and its activities.

He said the question made him reflect deeply, especially since many of his cousins and people around him were Catholics.

Remo further shared that he later sought permission from his father regarding the decision. According to him, his father told him that he could follow whatever path he wished, but should not change his name.

Respecting his late father’s wish, the filmmaker said he still writes his full name as “Remo Gopi D’Souza.”
It is worth mentioning that Remo married Lizelle D’Souza in 1999 when he was 20 years old. The couple now has two sons named Adonis and Gabriel.
