China warns against “might-is-right” approach in global affairs

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday said it is high time to support, reinvigorate and strengthen the United Nations amid growing global turbulence and escalating hotspot conflicts.

According to Chinese official media, Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during a meeting with President of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, held in Beijing.

Wang Yi stated that certain countries adopting a “might-is-right” approach are challenging the authority and role of the United Nations, posing a serious threat to the multilateral system.

He stressed that in the face of growing global headwinds, crosscurrents, and coercive practices, all sides must adhere to unity, cooperation, fairness, and justice, warning that allowing the “law of the jungle” or dominance by power politics would be unacceptable.

The Chinese Foreign Minister said China has consistently fulfilled its responsibility in maintaining international peace and security and has firmly upheld the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

Noting that this year marks the 55th anniversary of China’s restoration of its lawful seat in the United Nations, Wang Yi said China will continue to safeguard the UN-centred international system, promote shared global development, and contribute to improving global governance through its own development.

He further emphasized that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 has definitively resolved the issue of China’s representation, including Taiwan, at the United Nations, adding that China appreciates adherence to the resolution and opposes any attempts to challenge its authority.

UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, according to Xinhua, thanked China for its long-standing support to the United Nations and its General Assembly, saying China has played an important role in promoting multilateralism, international law, peace, development, and human rights.

She expressed readiness to further strengthen cooperation with China to improve global governance and advance global peace and development, while affirming that the 80th UNGA will continue to abide by Resolution 2758.
