Zafar Gohar becomes eligible to play for England

Pakistani-born spinner Zafar Gohar has become eligible to represent England after acquiring British citizenship, opening a new chapter in his professional cricket career.

Gohar, who has previously represented Pakistan in one Test and one One Day International, is currently playing county cricket for Middlesex after moving from Gloucestershire in 2025.

In English county cricket, spin bowlers are often assessed not only on their bowling skills but also on their batting contributions and adaptability over time—an expectation Gohar appears to be meeting.

Although his wicket tally this season has been modest, his batting performances have drawn attention, including a notable 83-run innings that contributed to an aggregate of 164 runs, highlighting his value as a lower-order all-rounder.

Speaking about his journey, Gohar acknowledged that spin bowling in England presents unique challenges due to conditions that often offer limited assistance. However, he expressed confidence that discipline and strategy can lead to success even on less responsive pitches.

He also noted his pride in performing at iconic venues such as Lord’s, where spinners traditionally find fewer opportunities.

Reflecting on his early international career, Gohar admitted disappointment over limited chances with Pakistan, saying his consistent domestic and county performances were often overlooked.

Now eligible for England selection, he remains optimistic about the possibility of earning a national call-up, stating that he is ready to make full use of any opportunity that comes his way.
