Film city authority bill tabled in Punjab Assembly

The Punjab government has decided to establish the Punjab Film City Authority in a move aimed at revitalising the film industry and promoting creative content production across the province.

The Punjab Film City Authority Act 2025 has been introduced in the Punjab Assembly, proposing institutional support for filmmaking, television dramas, and documentary production. The initiative seeks to streamline regulatory mechanisms and provide a structured framework for industry growth.

Under the proposed legislation, the authority will be funded by the Government of Punjab to meet operational and development expenses. The bill envisages the introduction of a comprehensive film policy, including rules, regulations, and a licensing regime to facilitate producers and content creators.

A key feature of the proposal is the provision of a one-window operation, enabling filmmakers to obtain permits, approvals, and other necessary clearances through a single platform. This is expected to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and improve ease of doing business in the sector.

The bill also outlines incentives to attract both local and foreign investment, with a focus on positioning Punjab as a hub for film production. It emphasises promoting the province’s culture, tourism potential, and positive image through visual storytelling.

The legislation has been referred to the relevant standing committee for a period of two months, which will review the draft and present its report. Following the committee’s recommendations, the bill will be presented for approval in the Punjab Assembly.
