The African Cricket Association is considering the introduction of a T20 cricket cup across the continent as part of a major initiative aimed at generating financial resources and promoting the sport.
According to reports, the association is currently reviewing multiple proposals, although the tournament is unlikely to commence before 2027.
Sources indicate that two key aspects under discussion are the scheduling window for the Africa T20 Cup and the qualification criteria for participating teams.
In this regard, the role of Cricket South Africa is seen as crucial, given that South Africa remains the strongest side on the continent. However, its participation will depend on availability within the new Future Tours Programme.
Reports suggest that South Africa is, in principle, supportive of the initiative, but a final decision will be taken later due to a congested international schedule.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe Cricket, in collaboration with Namibia, is planning a tri-nation series that is likely to be held in August. The revenue generated from this series is expected to serve as a foundation for the proposed Africa Cup.
The development is also being viewed as significant in the context of preparations for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
