Lehmann criticises England players for limited county cricket participation

Darren Lehmann, head coach of Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, has criticised England’s approach to domestic cricket, saying national players are not participating enough in county matches while selectors are overlooking emerging talent.

Currently in his second season with Northamptonshire, Lehmann expressed hope that the England and Wales Cricket Board will strengthen its engagement with first-class counties following England’s disappointing performance in the The Ashes.

Lehmann revealed that he has held discussions with England’s managing director Rob Key and Test captain Ben Stokes regarding the issue.

Highlighting concerns over selection, he pointed out that Northamptonshire batter Saif Zaib, who was among the top run-scorers last season, was not included in the England Lions squad for a recent tour.

According to Lehmann, several talented county players are being denied proper opportunities at higher levels. He stressed that increased participation of national players in county cricket would significantly improve their preparation.

He further noted that inadequate preparation ahead of the Ashes, coupled with a lack of first-class matches, contributed to England’s poor showing in the series.

Lehmann expressed optimism about England’s chances in upcoming home fixtures but emphasised the need for a balanced strategy that adapts to varying playing conditions.
