Power Division hails NGC indigenization policy success

Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari has hailed the National Grid Company’s (NGC) indigenization policy as a transformative success, citing contracts worth PKR 12.673 billion awarded to local industries and savings of approximately 40 per cent on transmission line conductors compared to imported alternatives.

The minister said the outcomes reflect the government’s commitment to structural reforms aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing, reducing reliance on imports, and ensuring measurable economic benefits for the country.

Under the policy framework, local manufacturers have been empowered through educational orders, joint ventures with international partners, and the establishment of local subsidiaries to enhance technical capacity and production capability.

Under the minister’s oversight, these initiatives have resulted in nine educational orders valued at PKR 900 million and the registration of 11 local firms for capability development, further strengthening Pakistan’s industrial base.

Officials said the policy’s impact goes beyond cost reduction, contributing to macroeconomic stability through foreign exchange savings, while enabling timely delivery of materials that support faster completion of transmission projects across the country.

Looking ahead, the minister described indigenization as a key pillar for export-led growth, particularly in the steel, cable, and conductor sectors, where local capacity has expanded significantly. He reaffirmed the Power Division’s commitment to promoting such initiatives to enhance industrial self-reliance and long-term economic resilience.
