Ben Stokes calls Ashes defeat toughest phase of captaincy

England Test captain Ben Stokes has described the period following his team’s 1-4 defeat in the The Ashes against Australia as the most challenging phase of his captaincy.

In an open letter addressed to fans on social media, Stokes expressed full confidence in head coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key, reaffirming unity within the team’s leadership.

Stokes said that while captaincy is a privilege, it also comes with significant challenges. He noted that the past three months had tested him in multiple ways but added that he had learned valuable lessons from the experience.

He vowed to work closely with McCullum and Key to take the team forward and improve performances in the upcoming assignments.

During the Ashes series, Stokes had a modest outing, claiming 15 wickets and scoring 184 runs. He also suffered an injury during the final Test.

The England skipper is now focusing on the home series against New Zealand cricket team scheduled for June.

Meanwhile, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed that Stokes will continue as Test captain, with both McCullum and Key retaining their respective roles.

ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould acknowledged that the decision not to single out any individual for the defeat may be unpopular among fans, but emphasised the importance of collective responsibility.
