Pakistan-Saudi defence pact historic and strategic: Asim Iftikhar says

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, has described the defence agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia as historic and of strategic importance, saying it reflects decades of close cooperation and shared interests between the two countries.

In an interview with Arab News, the Pakistani envoy said Saudi Arabia is a key economic partner of Pakistan, adding that the defence pact is rooted in brotherly relations and common strategic objectives. He noted that following the agreement, economic cooperation between the two countries is also witnessing rapid growth.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar said terrorism continues to threaten Pakistan’s peace and economic stability, with banned outfits Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) attempting to spread unrest in the region. He stated that these groups are orchestrating attacks from across the border using safe havens.

He reaffirmed that Pakistan will continue decisive and comprehensive action against terrorism to safeguard national security and economic progress.

On regional and global issues, the envoy stressed that a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state are essential for lasting peace. He also emphasized the need for reforms to make the United Nations more effective in addressing contemporary global challenges.
