ICC faces media rights challenge ahead of 2026 T20 World Cup

The media rights for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup are under threat, with the International Cricket Council (ICC) now seeking a new broadcaster, sources said.

Reliance Industries’ JioStar, which holds India’s media rights for ICC events, informed the ICC that it will not be able to fulfil the remaining two years of its four-year agreement. The company cited significant financial losses as the reason for its withdrawal.

The 2026 T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka in February and March. Reports indicate that the ICC has launched a fresh process to sell the Indian media rights for the 2026-2029 cycle, with an expected valuation of approximately $2.4 billion.

For comparison, the ICC’s media rights for the 2024-27 cycle were valued at $3 billion, covering one major men’s event each year. The development poses a major challenge for the ICC ahead of one of its marquee tournaments.
