Big Bash League to play first-ever match in India

CHENNAI (Lord Media): For the first time in its history, Australia’s Big Bash League will host a match outside Australia. The opening match of the 2026-27 season will take place on December 12 at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium between defending champions Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades.

Cricket Australia announced this historic match during a ceremony in Melbourne attended by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The governments of both countries have collaborated to bring this plan to fruition.

Cricket Australia hopes this move could pave the way for potential overseas matches of the Indian Premier League in the future.

Both teams will travel to India after the sixth round of the Sheffield Shield and will take to the field in Chennai after a few days of preparation. Cricket Australia expects the 35,000-capacity stadium to be filled with spectators, as the Big Bash League is also quite popular in India.

The complete event schedule and ticket details will be released later.
