MELBOURNE (Lord Media): Australia has decided to sell uranium to India, resolving a years-long deadlock between the two nations. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an administrative agreement on uranium exports following their meeting in Melbourne. The leaders did not disclose the quantity of uranium Australia will supply to India or when the exports will commence.
The supply of uranium from Australia to India had been stalled since 2014 despite an agreement, due to concerns that the material could be used for nuclear weapons. Australia possesses the world’s largest known uranium reserves but does not use nuclear energy or maintain nuclear weapons itself, exporting all its uranium reserves.
India aims to generate 100 gigawatts of nuclear energy by 2047. However, India is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and Australia, being a member, has previously refused to sell uranium to non-signatory countries.
