KARACHI (Lord Media): An additional district and sessions court in Karachi South has sentenced Atif Zaman to death twice and imposed a fine of 1 million rupees in the murder case of anchorperson Mureed Abbas. The court has also issued arrest warrants for co-accused Adil Zaman, who remains at large.
Adil Zaman absconded in September 2020 after his bail was rejected, leading to his declaration as a fugitive. The verdict comes nearly seven years after the incident.
Based on the prosecution’s evidence, the court found Atif Zaman guilty of murder. He was sentenced to death twice for the murder of two individuals and ordered to pay a fine of 500,000 rupees to each of the victims’ families.
The high-profile incident occurred on July 9, 2019, in Karachi’s Defence area, stemming from a business dispute when Atif Zaman and his brother Adil Zaman murdered Mureed Abbas and Khizar Hayat.
According to Mureed Abbas’s wife, Zara Abbas, Atif Zaman deceived her husband with promises of business profits before killing him. Police arrested Atif Zaman after he attempted suicide.
