Air Force officer’s killer caught in 9 hours: IG Islamabad

Islamabad Inspector General of Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi on Sunday said police had arrested the suspect in-volved in the fatal shooting of Pakistan Air Force Group Captain Asim within nine hours of the incident.

Addressing a press conference at the Press Information Department (PID), the IG said the incident occurred at 11:21am and was treated as a high-priority case, prompting an immediate investigation.

He said the suspect, identified as Mu-hammad Saad Abbasi, and a woman named Nimra worked at a cash-and-carry store in Melody.
According to the police investigation, the two had previously been seen together, and on the day of the incident the suspect al-legedly wanted to take the woman to a park or another location. When she re-fused, he allegedly attempted to force her to accompany him.

The IG said Group Captain Asim no-ticed the situation, turned back and stopped his vehicle to intervene. As the woman moved towards the officer’s car, the suspect allegedly turned his motorcycle around and opened fire on the officer, who later embraced mar-tyrdom.

Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi said the woman had joined the store only about 10 days earlier. He termed the suspect’s actions criminal and said he had attempted to force the woman against her will.

He said 11 police teams were consti-tuted to trace the suspect. During the investigation, police examined footage from 275 Safe City cameras and used artificial intelligence-assisted surveil-lance tools to analyse evidence and identify the suspect.

The IG said the suspect belonged to Abbottabad and was arrested in Is-lamabad while allegedly preparing to leave the city. He had reportedly pur-chased an airline ticket and switched off his mobile data in an attempt to evade arrest.

He said all investigation teams re-mained in constant coordination, while advanced AI technology significantly accelerated the review of CCTV foot-age, enabling police to identify and apprehend the suspect within hours.

The police chief reaffirmed the de-partment’s commitment to ensuring justice and said the swift arrest re-flected the effective use of modern in-vestigative techniques and coordinated policing.
