Varanasi (Lord Media): In the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, five mosques were demolished in Varanasi over the past 24 hours. Indian authorities stated that the action was part of a government initiative to widen roads and implement urban development projects. A significant number of police and paramilitary personnel were deployed in the area during the operation.
Officials claimed that the mosques were obstructing planned routes and were demolished following legal procedures and prior notice. Some reports suggest that the administrations of the five mosques cooperated with the project, while the matter of a sixth mosque is pending in court.
Meanwhile, local Muslim organizations and some social activists have objected to the move, arguing that mosques of historical and religious significance have been damaged. They expressed concern and stated that the government should have sought alternative solutions.
