Pakistan plans for 500MW floating solar power project

Pakistan has finalized planning for a 500-megawatt floating solar power project aimed at expanding renewable energy generation and reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

The project will be developed on Keenjhar Lake in the southern province of Pakistan, marking one of the country’s largest planned floating solar installations.

Officials say the initiative is designed to strengthen clean energy capacity while addressing rising electricity demand through sustainable sources.

The project, estimated to cost around 243 million dollars, is expected to generate approximately 861.91 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually once completed.

Authorities confirmed that the scheme will be executed under an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model and awarded through a competitive bidding process to ensure transparency and efficiency.

Energy planners view the floating solar project as a significant step toward diversifying Pakistan’s energy mix and reducing reliance on imported fuel, which has long placed pressure on the national economy.

The development of solar infrastructure on water bodies is also expected to improve land-use efficiency while minimizing evaporation losses from reservoirs, adding an environmental benefit to the project’s economic goals.
