Pakistan, Iran discuss railway connectivity and regional peace

Pakistan and Iran have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding railway cooperation during a high-level meeting held in Islamabad on Wednesday.

According to official details, the Federal Minister for Railways met with Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam to discuss bilateral ties, railway connectivity projects and the evolving regional situation.

During the meeting, the railways minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to further deepening its longstanding brotherly relations with Iran, emphasizing the importance of historical, cultural and mutually respectful ties between the two neighbouring countries.

Both sides held detailed discussions on enhancing railway connectivity, with particular focus on the Taftan–Zahedan railway and the Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul freight train project.

Officials noted that stronger railway cooperation would play a key role in boosting regional trade, economic integration and connectivity between South Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East.

The meeting also reviewed progress on the repair and rehabilitation of the Quetta–Taftan railway section.

The minister stressed that improved infrastructure and effective security arrangements are essential to ensure uninterrupted and efficient railway operations.

Regional developments, particularly the situation in the Middle East, also came under discussion, with Pakistan reaffirming its support for peace, dialogue and diplomatic solutions to regional challenges.

Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability and praised Islamabad’s diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions.

Both sides also acknowledged the ongoing peace and de-escalation efforts being pursued under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, describing them as effective and significant.

The railways minister stated that Pakistan has consistently believed in dialogue, mutual respect and peaceful resolution of disputes, and will continue supporting diplomatic initiatives aimed at ensuring lasting regional stability.

The meeting concluded in a cordial atmosphere, with both sides agreeing to further expand bilateral cooperation, especially in the railway and connectivity sectors.
