China warns Taiwan issue is core risk in US ties

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has stated that the Taiwan question remains central to China’s core interests and represents the most significant risk in China–United States relations.

Wang made the remarks during a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to China’s Foreign Ministry.

He urged Washington to honour its commitments and take constructive steps to expand cooperation, manage differences, and contribute to global peace and stability.

Wang described head-of-state diplomacy as the “anchor” of bilateral relations, noting that ties between China and the United States have remained generally stable under the strategic guidance of both countries’ leadership. He said this stability serves the interests of both nations and aligns with international expectations.

He further called for efforts to strengthen communication, enhance coordination, and explore a framework of relations based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.

In response, Rubio said that the US–China relationship is the most important bilateral relationship globally and emphasized that leadership-level diplomacy remains central to maintaining stability.

He added that both sides should continue dialogue, respect each other’s concerns, properly manage differences, and build momentum for future high-level engagement.

The two officials also exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and other international issues during the conversation.
