FIFA President Gianni Infantino has stated that despite ongoing political and diplomatic tensions, Iran has confirmed its participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026 and will play its matches in the United States.
Speaking during the FIFA Congress held in Vancouver, Infantino said that Iran will not only take part in the tournament but will also play its group-stage matches on American soil. He emphasized that football’s purpose is to unite the world, and this principle guided the decision.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Concerns had previously been raised over Iran’s participation due to rising tensions between Tehran and Washington.
Iran had reportedly requested that its matches be relocated to a neutral venue, a request that FIFA rejected.
US authorities have also indicated that Iranian players will be allowed to compete, although certain visa and security restrictions may apply, particularly for individuals linked to specific institutions.
Iran’s absence from the FIFA Congress highlighted the sensitivity surrounding the issue, while global debate continues over the extent to which sports can remain separate from politics.
Iran has already qualified for the 2026 tournament, marking its seventh appearance at the World Cup.
However, following Infantino’s remarks, no official confirmation or denial has yet been issued by Iranian authorities regarding the latest statement.
