Globally renowned pop singer Britney Spears has once again landed in legal trouble after reportedly being charged in Southern California for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
According to American media reports, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office filed a misdemeanor case against the singer on April 30 over allegations of driving while under the influence of alcohol and narcotics. Prosecutors said Britney Spears is scheduled to appear before the Ventura County Superior Court on May 4.
Reports said that since the case is considered relatively minor, her lawyers are expected to represent her in court and her personal appearance may not be required.
According to prosecution officials, the singer could be offered a “wet reckless” plea deal, which refers to reckless driving involving alcohol or drugs and is often considered a legal concession for first-time offenders with low blood alcohol levels and no accident or injuries involved.
If the plea arrangement is approved, Britney Spears could face 12 months of probation, mandatory DUI classes and state fines.
The case stems from an incident on March 4, when the Britney Spears was reportedly stopped by the California Highway Patrol on a Ventura County highway while driving her black BMW at high speed in a reckless manner. Police officials claimed the singer showed visible signs of intoxication and was subjected to a field sobriety test.
A few weeks after the incident, on April 12, her representative confirmed that the 44-year-old singer had voluntarily checked into a rehabilitation facility for treatment.
Britney’s spokesperson described the arrest as “regrettable and unacceptable,” adding that it could serve as an important first step toward positive changes in her life.
The spokesperson further stated that the singer continues to receive support from her family, close relatives and children during this difficult period as she works to move her life in a better direction.
