Iran has formally confirmed its participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026, putting to rest uncertainty amid heightened tensions with the United States.
The announcement comes at a time of strained relations between Iran and United States, but officials said preparations for the national team’s participation have been finalised.
Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani told state media that the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs has completed arrangements to provide top facilities to the team, ensuring optimal performance at the global event.
Earlier reports attributed to Iran’s sports minister had hinted at a possible withdrawal, fuelling speculation. However, the latest clarification has dispelled those concerns.
Despite ongoing regional tensions and recent military clashes, Iranian authorities stressed that sporting activities would not be affected by political developments.
Officials also pointed to improving conditions following a recent ceasefire effort reportedly facilitated by Pakistan, which has further reinforced Iran’s participation prospects.
Meanwhile, media reports claim that Paolo Zampolli, described as a representative of Donald Trump, had approached Gianni Infantino with a request to consider including Italy a four-time world champion in place of Iran. However, no official confirmation has been made regarding such a move.
