Australian cricketer David Warner is facing uncertainty over his captaincy of Sydney Thunder after being arrested in a drink-driving incident in Sydney.
According to reports, the 39-year-old batter had returned to Australia on a short break during the ongoing 11th season of the Pakistan Super League.
Police stopped Warner in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on Easter Sunday and conducted a breath test, which found his blood alcohol level above the legal limit. He was subsequently taken into custody and transferred to Maroubra Police Station for further testing.
A day after the incident, New South Wales extended its support to the cricketer despite the controversy.
In a statement, officials said they were fully aware of the situation and take drink-driving offences seriously, but would stand by Warner during this difficult time.
Warner is scheduled to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on May 7, where the case will be heard.
The development has raised questions over his leadership role at Sydney Thunder, with further action likely to depend on legal proceedings and the team management’s review.
