China backs UN-led global governance of artificial intelligence

China firmly supports the United Nations as the main channel for global artificial intelligence (AI) governance, a Chinese envoy said during the International Vienna Energy and Climate Forum.

Li Song, China’s permanent representative to the UN and other international organizations in Vienna, made the remarks on Thursday at a side event focusing on AI-enabled low-carbon energy transition and reducing AI energy consumption.

Li said the China-proposed Global AI Governance Initiative advocates a systematic approach balancing development and security, promoting a people-centered and AI-for-good vision, and emphasizing equality, mutual benefit, and respect for shared interests in global AI governance.

He added that China is willing to work with all parties to strengthen the UN’s central role in global AI governance, deepen practical cooperation, and expand capacity-building with the Global South.

Li also highlighted the importance of leveraging China’s experience and technological strengths to contribute to more inclusive and balanced international AI governance frameworks.

At the event, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Deputy Director General Zou Ciyong called for joint efforts to explore practical pathways for using AI to advance sustainable industrial development and strengthen global partnerships.

Representatives from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization, and other stakeholders also shared perspectives on emerging technologies, including AI-driven energy systems, low-carbon nuclear solutions, and advanced cooling technologies.
