The White House Office of Management and Budget has released its fiscal year 2027 budget proposal, outlining a significant increase in defense spending alongside notable reductions in domestic programs, reflecting a clear shift in federal priorities.
According to the proposal, defense funding is projected to rise to $1.5 trillion, marking a substantial increase from previous levels. The plan characterizes this as an extension of a broader national security focus, emphasizing military readiness and global strategic positioning. At the same time, non-defense spending would be reduced by around 10 percent compared to 2026 levels.
White House budget director Russell Vought said the plan builds on what he described as a historic defense topline, while aiming to restrain overall federal expenditures outside the defense sector.
President Donald Trump has underscored defense as a central pillar of the administration’s agenda.
Speaking at a recent White House event, he argued that certain domestic responsibilities, including areas such as childcare, should be managed at the state level rather than through federal programs.
The proposal also outlines cuts across multiple domestic sectors, including health-related programs, refugee resettlement assistance, renewable energy initiatives, university funding, and housing support.
