The African Union (AU) expressed support for a China-Pakistan five-point initiative aimed at addressing escalating peace and security challenges in the Gulf and Middle East region, describing it as a constructive step toward de-escalation.
In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said the initiative represents a timely contribution to ongoing international efforts to reduce tensions and promote a diplomatic resolution to the crisis.
He noted that key elements of the proposal including an immediate halt to hostilities, protection of civilians, adherence to international humanitarian law, and the safeguarding of maritime security align with essential measures needed to contain the conflict.
Youssouf also voiced concern over the continued escalation in the region, warning that its impact is already being felt beyond the immediate conflict zone. He pointed to disruptions in global energy supply chains, food systems, and economic stability, with Africa particularly vulnerable due to existing structural challenges.
Calling for restraint and urgent de-escalation, the AU chief urged all parties to comply with international law and the United Nations Charter. He emphasized that sustainable peace can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiated political solutions.
Reaffirming the African Union’s commitment to peace efforts, Youssouf said the organization stands ready to cooperate with international and regional partners to help restore stability in the region.
