The Arab League has strongly condemned a recently approved Israeli bill allowing the execution of Palestinian prisoners, describing it as a violation of international humanitarian law.
According to a statement from the organization, Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit said the legislation undermines the requirements of justice and reflects “flagrant discrimination against Palestinians.”
He warned that the measure is part of broader efforts to restrict the Palestinian presence, erode human rights, and potentially facilitate the annexation of the West Bank.
The remarks follow Israel’s parliamentary approval of a bill that makes the death penalty the default punishment for Palestinians in the West Bank convicted of “terrorism,” a move that has drawn widespread international criticism.
The proposed law, introduced by the country’s far-right coalition government, mandates capital punishment for Palestinians convicted of killing Israelis with intent, while not applying to Israelis who kill Palestinians, according to reports.
