PM Shehbaz Sharif vows relief for vulnerable amid economic challenges

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated that the government will not leave economically vulnerable segments alone during challenging times, stressing continued efforts to provide relief to low- and middle-income groups.

Chairing a high-level review meeting on the impact of the Gulf crisis on petroleum products, domestic fuel reserves, and public relief measures, the prime minister said the government remains committed to easing the burden on the common man.

The meeting was briefed in detail on fuel conservation measures, implementation of government policies, current petroleum stocks, and proposals for future planning. Officials informed that coordination with provincial governments is underway to ensure registration of motorcycles and rickshaws, enabling eligible individuals to benefit from potential relief initiatives.

An audit report by the Intelligence Bureau was also presented, reviewing progress on the prime minister’s austerity campaign and fuel-saving measures. The briefing highlighted that adequate fuel reserves are available to meet national requirements, with arrangements in place for the future as well.

It was noted that levies on high-octane fuel used by luxury vehicles have been increased, while jet fuel prices remain unchanged. The meeting was further informed that sufficient stocks of medicines are also available in the country.

Prime Minister Sharif said administrative steps such as reduction in government expenditures, cuts in development budgets, and the immediate suspension of 60 percent of official vehicles were part of a broader austerity drive initiated by the government.

He added that proposals for fuel price increases had been repeatedly rejected, with savings redirected toward public relief. Emphasizing the use of digital systems, he said efforts are being made to ensure that relief measures reach ordinary citizens effectively.

Despite global challenges, the prime minister noted that timely decisions have ensured uninterrupted fuel supply in the country. He also stated that Pakistan is actively pursuing diplomatic efforts on regional peace through international engagement.

The meeting was attended by senior federal ministers, the deputy prime minister and foreign minister, advisers, special assistants, and other senior officials.
