Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has clarified that fitness concerns were the primary reason behind his absence from the recent ODI series against Bangladesh.
The left-handed batter, who featured in the ICC T20 World Cup, was not included in the ODI squad, sparking speculation over his omission. Pakistan went on to lose the three-match series 2-1, with the team’s overall performance drawing criticism.
Addressing the matter, Fakhar said he was not fully fit to play 50-over cricket at the time of selection. He added that the decision taken by team management, including Aaqib Javed, was justified.
“I was not 100 percent fit to play ODI matches, and Aaqib Javed was right in this regard,” Fakhar stated.
He further revealed that he only resumed competitive cricket after clearing a fitness test on March 15, which allowed him to participate in the ongoing National T20 Cup.
Pakistan had also handed ODI debuts to four new players during the Bangladesh series as part of a broader team transition. However, the side struggled to deliver consistent performances, ultimately conceding the series.
Fakhar’s return to full fitness is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s batting lineup in upcoming assignments.
