China urges Syrian-led political solution at UN Security Council

China has reaffirmed its support for a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process to resolve the ongoing conflict in Syria, urging all parties to engage in inclusive dialogue and advance political reconciliation.

Speaking at a UN Security Council briefing on Syria, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Fu Cong said recent developments in Syria and its northeast region showed some positive momentum, but stressed that outstanding issues must ultimately be resolved through political means.

Fu Cong emphasized the importance of combating terrorism and maintaining security, noting that terrorism continues to pose a serious threat to regional peace and stability. He urged Syria’s transitional authorities to meet their obligations and take effective action against internationally recognized terrorist organizations.

“China firmly opposes terrorism in all its forms and rejects any double standards in counter-terrorism efforts,” he said.

On the humanitarian situation, Fu called on traditional donor countries to increase assistance to Syria, where an estimated 16.5 million people are in urgent need of aid and 7.1 million face food insecurity.

He also urged relevant countries to mitigate the impact of unilateral sanctions on Syria to support economic recovery and reconstruction efforts.

Fu further warned that the worsening regional situation risks deepening instability, stating that continued hostilities could inflict greater suffering on civilians and negatively affect regional and global economies.

“The entire Middle East is being pushed toward a dangerous precipice,” he said, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities to prevent further escalation.

China, he added, remains committed to playing a constructive role in efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region.
