Trump says Iranian squad may face security risks in US

US President Donald Trump has suggested that Iran’s national football team should avoid traveling to the United States for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, warning that their security could be at risk.

According to reports, Trump said it might be better for the Iranian squad to stay away from the tournament in order to protect their lives and safety.

The remarks come at a time when tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated in recent days.

The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to be held from June 11 to July 19 and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Iran’s national team had already qualified for the global tournament after finishing first in Group A of the Asian qualifiers, securing their fourth consecutive appearance in the World Cup.

However, the country’s participation has recently become uncertain due to the evolving political situation.

President of the Iran Football Federation Mehdi Taj said that under the current circumstances, taking part in the World Cup appears difficult.

Similarly, Iran’s sports minister said in a television interview that following recent attacks and rising tensions, it may not be possible for the team to participate in the tournament.

Earlier, Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, had said he received assurances from Trump that the Iranian team would be welcomed at the tournament, adding that football serves as a bridge connecting people across the world.
