In a major push to curb rising street crime, Peshawar police have made registration compulsory for all motorcycle riders who transport passengers. The initiative is being rolled out through a newly introduced mobile application named SafeRide, officials said on Friday.
City Police Chief Dr. Mian Saeed told reporters that the SafeRide system is designed to help police identify riders quickly and reduce incidents of robbery involving motorcycles.
According to him, riders who carry passengers will now have to register at their respective police stations. After verification, they will receive a QR-code sticker for their motorcycle. Police say the sticker will allow officers to confirm the identity of a rider within seconds during roadside checks.
Dr. Saeed said the move aims to rebuild public trust after several cases where passengers were looted by bike riders posing as service providers. In some incidents, armed robbers also targeted genuine riders at gunpoint.
The police chief confirmed that 20 suspects involved in such crimes have already been arrested. He added that this is the first large-scale step in Peshawar’s new anti–street crime strategy. Police plan to compile digital records of riders and use modern technology to track criminal activity more efficiently.
Officials believe the system will help identify suspicious riders before crimes occur, offering citizens a safer commuting experience.
